The Best Free Places To Visit in Townsville

Townsville is the 4th most visited city in Queensland and is worth visiting for 4-5 days. Also add on a few days to spend at beautiful Magnetic Island. There is beautiful hiking trails, mountain trails, an island to explore and a beautiful river where you can walk along at sunset.

Magnetic Island

No trip to Townsville is complete without taking the short 20 minute ferry ride over to the beautiful island. Set within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The island is known for its beautiful bays and beaches, of snorkeling trails along the fringing reefs. It is also home to northern Australia’s largest wild koala colony. You can explore the island on a day trip or head over and spend a few nights on the island. To read more click Here. Although getting to Magnetic island is around $40 per passenger it is worth it.

Castle Hill

Castle Hill is a heritage-listed pink granite monolith, that looks over the city skyline. Hiking it in time for sunset or heading up here for sunrise. Is one of the most rewarding things you can do in Townsville. It has panoramic views over the city and out to the ocean and over Magnetic Island. There are several trails you can take to get to the top, including the short, sweet but very steep Goat Track, which sets off from Hillside Crescent just outside of the CBD. The most popular Cudtheringa Track can be accessed from the bottom of Castle Hill Road in North Ward. With steep and challenging beginning and end sections, 

Mount Louisa

Is located in Mount Louisa 10km from Townsville CBD. This trail is popular by the locals and is a 3.5km return trail along a well maintained trail. There is a lot of stairs to the top by is a moderate grade 3 track. You will be rewarded to spectacular views over Townsville up the top. Allow 1 hour to hike the trail.

Walk Along the Ross River

Take your bike or walk a section of the Ross River. You can take the trail up one way and back along the other side. The trail starts in Townsville next to the stadium and goes to Thuringowa Central. You will also find the free large lagoon here where you can cool off. There is smaller sections along the river too.
